ABOUT

Stark County has a rich food history starting with our agricultural roots and continuing into the present with urban and rural farming, field-to-fork restaurants, and many other food-focused agencies.  Project EAT! highlights the many existing programs working to celebrate the culture of food and make it accessible to our community, while showcasing exciting new food-related events created throughout the Stark County area in 2019.

 

An integral part of this initiative was building partnerships, not just with other cultural organizations, but with groups who are working to end food insecurity and connect people to fresh food options. Together, we have been able to raise awareness about current efforts to address hunger in our community, as well as indicate ways that each of us can help.

 

We invite to you to be part of Project EAT! by attending one or more of our events.  There is something for everyone, from food-related exhibitions and programs to festivals and lectures. Please consider volunteering or donating food or money to a group or agency assisting in hunger reduction. At its core, Project EAT! is about helping all of us understand the ways that food touches our lives, and connects us to the people around us.

Summer 
Science

Camp

   Kids in grades 1-5 will enjoy exploring science through food with Science Director Lynette Reiner. Themed days include  kitchen science experiments, nature edibles, and a bake-off.  Sign up for one day or the whole week.  Cost is $18/day for museum members, $20/day for non-members.  Pre-paid reservations required.

Garlic

Fest

We will be holding educational sessions
 where you can learn how to cook with fresh
garlic, how to plant garlic, when to harvest
garlic, the health benefits of garlic and so
 much more! You can also participate with our garlic Pull, cleaning and storing garlic, replanting garlic beds, and a garlic eating contest.

Creations

Parents, come join your little artists in this exciting play date workshop joining food and art! You and your child will be immersed in multisensory art making activities for toddlers and adults to enjoy together. Have fun learning about food and art while playing and creating with edible art materials. Once you have had your fill explore the tasty looking artwork on display for free in the galleries for an awesome morning of fun!

Breakfast on the Farm

The Pero Dairy Farm is a modern dairy that uses robots to milk their cows. Learn how the Pero family care for their animals while help provide us with a great local source for milk! While at the event take a tour of the farm, see the cows being milked and ask questions to the farm family and others about agriculture.

Soup at Six:

“Ballpark Food” 

Presented by Dr. Leslie Heaphy, Associate Chair & Associate Professor of History at Kent State University at Stark, this program will explore the history and fun of ballpark food. Learn about the stories and strange facts behind some of your favorite eats at the ballpark! The program is $20.            Reservations are required.

Farmers

America 

The McKinley Presidential Library &
    Museum will host a FREE screening of the   documentary Farmers for America, narrated by Mike Rowe, at The Palace in downtown Canton. This film examines the central question of “Who will feed us?” in the future. Sponsored by ArtsinStark.

Fall Fundraiser: 

“Eating Your Way
Through History”

Experience popular foods of past decades    in a “progressive dinner” through the Street of Shops at the McKinley Museum. Cost is $25 for museum members, $30 for non-members. Pre-paid reservations required.

Dialogue

A dynamic and engaging conference at Walsh University for community partners, faculty, and students to engage in the critical issues of hunger in our local and global communities. Emphasis will be on innovation and unique collaborations. The weekend includes food tours and food design thinking workshops.

DRIVE

    Visitors to the McKinley Museum will receive $1 off admission with the donation of gently used or new pots & pans. All items donated are used in StarkFresh programs and given to those in need.

SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 6 

Tea with the Curator:  “The ABCs of Nutrition: 
A History of ‘Scientific Eating’”

    Join McKinley Museum Executive Director Kim Kenney for a historical perspective on healthy eating. The program will include a tour of the Keller Gallery exhibition “Stark County Food:  From Early Farming to Modern Meals” and a book signing with Kim Kenney and Barbara Abbott of Canton Food Tours. The program is $15. Reservations are required.  

OCTOBER 7

World Food Day

Short Film 
Festival

    Celebrate World Food Day at Walsh    University watching and discussing a    series of short documentary films on food,    hunger, and sustainability.

OCTOBER 16

Dinner
with the President 

The McKinley Museum offer's presidential dining packages for motor coach groups, but this experience has never been open to the general public – until now! Join President McKinley for a special evening that includes dinner and a look at the President’s favorite stories about his wife Ida, the Front Porch Campaign, and his presidency. This special presidential experience is $35 per person. Reservations are required.  

OCTOBER 17

Soup at Six: 
“The True Story of Thanksgiving”

    What was the first Thanksgiving REALLY
   like? Spoiler alert: it was nothing like you’ve been taught!  Learn the true story of
    Thanksgiving with Executive Director Kim
    Kenney. Special guest Maureen Tate will
    talk about the Stark County Hunger Task
    Force before the program. The program is
    $20. Reservations are required.  

NOVEMBER 14 at 6 p.m.

Open
Hearth Dinner

The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum will host this Open Hearth Dinner.  Doors will open at 6:00 and guests will be able to observe the meal being prepared at the hearth. Dinner will be served at 6:30
 in the Museum’s Street of Shops. The cost
is $45 per person. Reservations are required
and payment is due at the time reservations
 are made. There is limited seating available
    so sign up today! The deadline to make
